Depakote Side Effects in Kids

Depakote is often prescribed to children to control seizures. Other names for depakote are valproate, valproic acid and divalproex sodium. Depakote can be used to treat myclonic, absence and tonic-clonic seizures. It also can treat seizures caused by flashing lights and infantile spasms. However, taking depakote is not without risks.

    Irritability

    • Some children who take depakote will have increased irritability.

    Bleeding Problems

    • Some children taking depakote will have nosebleeds or clotting problems. Also, they may bruise easily.

    Other Possible Side Effects

    • Children taking depakote may experience tiredness, dizziness, upset stomach, vomiting and weight gain.
