Lower Abdominal Pain in Late Pregnancy

Abdominal pain is a common pregnancy complaint. With all the hormonal and physical changes your body experiences, displacement of organs and loosening of joints, there are bound to be discomforts. Typically, there is no need to worry as these issues are usually minor. Bloating, gas and constipation can all cause lower abdominal pain in late pregnancy. Along with harmless causes of lower abdominal pain symptoms in pregnancy, however, there are some more serious problems to be alert for as well.

  1. Appendicitis

    • Appendicitis can cause lower abdominal pain in pregnancy. This emergency condition manifests in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen.

    Labor

    • Labor frequently causes pain in the lower abdomen during late pregnancy. The pain may be consistent, come in waves, and could be accompanied by back pain, vaginal bleeding or mucous discharge.

    Ligaments

    • From 10 to 30 percent of pregnant women experience round ligament pain. These are the ligaments that support the uterus on the underside of the belly, resulting in uncomfortable stretching and pressure in late pregnancy.

    Pelvic Misalignment

    • Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) causes mild to severe pain in the central lower abdomen. The bones and ligaments that form the pelvic girdle can be displaced because of the pregnancy hormone relaxin, causing discomfort.

    Other Causes

    • Other causes of lower abdominal pain in pregnant women are adhesions (scar tissue from previous surgery), intestinal obstruction and urinary tract infection.

    Prevention/Solution

    • The discomforts of pain in late pregnancy--particularly SPD--can be relieved with regular chiropractic care.
