Home Remedies for Pet Stains

We love our pets, but we certainly don't love the stains they sometimes leave behind. Pet stains can wreak havoc on our carpets, upholstery and mattresses, leaving behind smelly, unsightly spots. Luckily, you don't have to spend lots of money on specialized stain fighters--you can use homemade remedies to combat pet stains and keep your home smelling and looking great. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Vinegar and Water

    • Mix a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% warm water in a spray bottle. The diluted vinegar will help lift the stain and neutralize the odor. This homemade remedy is especially effective on set-in pet stains.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda is a simple remedy that will combat stains and remove odors; it is non-toxic and safe for use around pets. Sprinkle the stain with the baking soda and allow it to sit. Once dry, vacuum the area.

    Peroxide

    • Mix together a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. Spray the solution on the pet stain and let it sit for approximately five minutes before blotting. Always test the surface in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure the mixture does not cause discoloration.

    Dishwashing Detergent

    • Regular dishwashing detergent and a sponge can work wonders on a pet stain. Blot the stain from the center out to avoid spreading.

    Rubbing Alcohol

    • Rubbing alcohol, which helps to kill bacteria, can be applied to pet stains. You can use full strength rubbing alcohol or you can create a solution of 1/3 water, 1/3 white vinegar and 1/3 rubbing alcohol. Apply the mixture to the stain, blot and repeat. Vacuum when dry.

    Cleaning Tips

    • Try not to let stains set. Use plain white paper towels or tissues to blot---not rub---the stain. Also, never use ammonia on pet stains. The ammonia will make the stain smell stronger and actually attract your pet to that spot.
