GERD Diets for Children

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease characterized by a persistent reflux of acid into the esophagus. Reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter, which is a muscular valve at the end of the esophagus that allows food to pass into the stomach and gas to escape from the stomach, either opens too often or does not close fully. GERD in children can lead to problems such as tooth decay, malnutrition, esophageal ulcers and inflammation. Symptoms of GERD in children may include vomiting and respiratory problems such as bronchitis, chronic cough and pneumonia.

  1. Foods That May Improve GERD Symptoms in Children

    • Eating high-fiber foods can aid in digestion and may help alleviate GERD symptoms. Children with GERD should eat plenty of whole grains, vegetables and fruits (avoid citrus fruits). Also, consuming fish, which contains Omega-3 acids, may help. Omega-3 acids help control inflammation within the body.

Foods That May Make GERD Worse

    • Some foods that may make GERD worse are fatty foods, spicy foods, garlic, onions, tomatoes, peppermint, citrus fruits and chocolate. Children should avoid or dramatically limit these foods.

Drinks That May Make GERD Worse

    • Citrus juices and drinks that contain carbonation or caffeine may also trigger GERD symptoms. It may be helpful for children to avoid drinks containing these ingredients as much as possible.

Eating Habits That May Make GERD Worse

    • Eating right before going to bed and eating large portions can make GERD symptoms worse. Also, children with GERD should not snack before bedtime.

Eating Habits That May Improve GERD

    • Children should eat their last meal at least 3 hours before going to bed to help alleviate GERD symptoms. Also, eating smaller meals may help as well.

When Diet Changes and Habits Aren't Enough

    • Many times, changing a child's diet and eating habits alone are not enough to control serious cases of GERD. Thus, many children will need medications to control this condition.
