Teenage Depression Symptoms

When dealing with teenagers and their moods, it can be hard to determine the difference between normal teen angst and a case of clinical depression. However, it is important to recognize what is teenage depression so it can be quickly and properly treated, especially with the associated risk of suicide.

Sadness

Frequent bouts of crying and signs of persistent sadness, such as wearing black clothes, obsession with horror film or morbid books, and dark writings, are all symptoms of teenage depression.

Boredom

Persistent boredom can be a sign of teenage depression, especially when accompanied by lowered motivation, poor school attendance and a lack of energy.

Hopelessness

Hopelessness is a major symptom in depressed teenagers. Comments regarding a hopeless future and neglect of goals and basic hygiene often accompany clinical depression in teens.

Loss of Interest

When a teen suddenly loses interest in once-enjoyed activities and no longer seems to be pursuing a fun time, this could indicate a case of depression.

Physical Problems

Unexplained and frequent headaches, pain and stomach aches accompanied by one or more of the preceding emotional symptoms could very well equal a teenage depressive condition.
