Root Canal Alternatives

Root canals are the chambers in the roots of the teeth. A root canal, commonly called root canal treatment, is necessary when exposed nerves become painful and or infected. Cracks in the tooth or cavities can cause the nerve to be exposed. During a root canal treatment, the inside of the tooth, including nerves, pulp and blood vessels, is removed. High cost and immense pain are associated with root canal treatment, causing many people to search for alternatives.

  1. Direct Pulp Capping

    • Direct pulp capping is a procedure that is gaining popularity. Direct pulp capping cleans the area around the exposed nerve and seals the area using a liquid plastic. The liquid plastic's base is made with calcium hydroxide.

    Endodontic Surgery

    • Endodontic surgery is an alternative chosen mostly after root canal treatment has failed. Endodontic surgery, or apicoectomy, removes the root tips. Once removed, the root tips are filled to seal off the root.

    Extraction

    • Extraction is often the last alternative to root canals. In extraction, the tooth is pulled out of the mouth. Extraction is often preferred because it is less expensive and quicker than undergoing root canal treatment.

    Diet

    • Diet can help prevent and heal an infection in the root canal. Foods with white sugar and flour help feed infections and should be avoided. Raw milk from pasture raised animals, raw meat and fish, and yellow butter help treat infection.

    Plantain Poultice

    • Plantain poultice is a herbal remedy for fighting an infection in teeth. Plantain is a weed found worldwide that pulls toxins out of the body. A poultice, or moist mass, is then placed around the infected tooth.
