Migraine Dizziness Symptoms

Migraine sufferers usually experience other symptoms on top of their headache, and dizziness is one of the most common. Dizziness and vertigo are not the same symptom, but both can cause weakness, fatigue and nausea. When people are dizzy, they feel faint, as though they might pass out. When people experience vertigo, they report imbalance and sense of movement; this feeling tends to last longer than dizziness, which is short-lived.

    Identification

  1. Migraine sufferers can experience eye, head or neck pain, along with dizziness, vertigo, sudden fatigue, weakness, aura and sound sensitivity at onset.
  2. Diagnosis

  3. No diagnostic tests for migraine-associated dizziness are available. Clinical history is the best determinate of future episodes.
  4. Migraine Prevention/Treatment

  5. Several medications can aid in the prevention of migraine, including calcium-channel and beta blockers, such as Verapamil, that prevent the constriction of arteries and increase oxygen flow. Doctors recommend that sufferers take migraine or pain medication as soon as they experience any symptoms. Commonly prescribed medicines include sumatriptan (i.e., Imitrex) and naratriptan (i.e., Amerge). New on the market is Treximet, which combines sumatriptan with naproxen sodium, an anti-inflammatory drug similar to ibuprofen.
  6. Other Methods of Prevention

  7. Avoid these common migraine triggers: (1) changes in weather or air pressure and bright or glaring sunlight; (2) lack of sleep or change in sleeping patterns; (3) hormone fluctuations and menstrual cycles; (4) certain foods, such as alcohol (especially red wine), processed meats, fermented cheeses, chocolate, caffeine, aspartame and MSG; (5) stress or anxiety; and (6) environmental factors, including strong odors or fumes, loud or sudden noises or an unusual motion (causing motion sickness).
  8. Self-Care at Home

  9. Drink plenty of water and eat regularly to prevent dizziness from occurring. Regular rest is important. Rising slowly to a standing position will help maintain your equilibrium. Be careful when climbing or descending steps and hold onto the railing; use a walker or cane if you feel unsteady. Take deep breaths and remain calm if you experience stress or anxiety. Seek reassurance from others, including loved ones and/or a professional counselor. If dizziness persists, see your doctor.
