Lung Disease & Lung Cancer Symptoms

The symptoms of lung diseases and lung cancer may not appear until the disease is advanced. Many of the symptoms of lung disease are similar to other mild illnesses and might not be recognized as being a serious condition, which may delay treatment. The symptoms of lung diseases and lung cancer are similar and include breathing problems, pain and malaise.

  1. Mucus

    • Production of excessive mucus along with wheezing may be a symptom of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), which is a lung disease which can be caused by emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

    Difficulty Breathing

    • Shortness of breath at rest and an inability to catch your breath during moderate exercise is a symptom of lung diseases including asbestosis, emphysema, COPD and lung cancer.

    Coughing

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, coughing with or without blood is a symptom of lung diseases such as asbestosis, chronic bronchitis, COPD and lung cancer.

    Chest Pain

    • Tightness and pain in the chest may result from coughing or fluid buildup in the lungs and is a symptom of several lung diseases including asbestosis, COPD and lung cancer.

    Weakness

    • Fatigue and a decreased ability to perform physical activity or exercise are symptoms of advanced lung diseases such as asbestosis and lung cancer.

    Weight Loss

    • Loss of appetite or unintended weight loss are symptoms of lung diseases including tuberculosis and lung cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Aches

    • Muscle and back aches may be caused by chronic lung diseases including emphysema, bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer.
