Causes of Spider Veins

Spider veins are red, blue or dark purple veins that are swollen and easily visible at the skin's surface. They are unsightly in appearance, and can develop on various areas of the body including the legs, thighs and face. Read below for more information on the causes and identification of spider veins.

  1. Misconceptions

    • It is a common assumption that spider veins are solely the result of aging. While age can be a cause of spider veins, it is not the only factor.

    Causes

    • Spider veins can be caused by many types of factors like taking birth control pills, genetic predisposition or heredity, pregnancy and obesity. They can also be caused by blood circulation issues and hormonal changes such as menopause.

    Identification

    • Spider veins often look like spider webs or a network of thin branches. They are usually either red or blue in color.

    Size

    • Unlike varicose veins which are much larger, spider veins are usually small in size, and appear less bulky and bundled. However, the actual network of spider veins can be large or small.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Sclerotherapy, or injecting the veins with a salt solution, is a commonly used procedure to treat spider veins. Other treatments include radiofrequency occlusion and surgery.
