Certain medicines such as tranquilizers, antihistamines and some high blood pressure drugs may cause dry eyes. An allergy to contact lenses can also be a culprit. Wind, heat and air conditioning are also causes. Some cases can also be related to menopause, rheumatoid arthritis, or Sjsgren's syndrome.

A washcloth compress used for five minutes several times a day helps to open up clogged glands and may offer relief. A humidifier also provides comfort. Positioning ceiling fans and vents from blowing on the eyes also helps. Many experts suggest wrap-around polarized sunglasses and eye protecting sunglasses or goggles. Some nutritional supplements that contain certain essential fatty acids can decrease dry eye symptoms (linoleic and gammalinolenic). Drinking more water can also help.
