Proper Care of Dentures

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), taking proper care of your dentures is essential to prolonging their life and ensuring good dental health. There are several steps you should take to properly care for your dentures, including rinsing, brushing and using an ultrasonic cleaner.

  1. Rinsing

    • The ADA recommends that dentures be rinsed with cool water at least once a day to remove loose food particles. This can be performed at night before brushing.

    Brushing

    • According to the ADA, dentures should be brushed with a soft toothbrush and specially-formulated denture cleanser at least once per day. This will prevent bacteria and plaque from forming on your dentures.

    Approved Cleaning Products

    • You can use a denture cleanser, but the ADA has also found that a mild hand soap works fine too. Never use bleach on your dentures.

    Soaking

    • Whenever you remove your dentures, soak them in water or a specialized denture cleanser. According to the ADA, dentures can become misshapen if they are left to dry out.

    Ultrasonic Cleaners

    • The ADA recommends using a ultrasonic cleaner made for dentures at least once a week. However, you should still brush your dentures at least once per day.
