In any health care setting, a variety of different tools are used. Most commonly, you will see the stethoscope in use. Stethoscopes are used to listen to sounds such as the heart, lungs, and the bowels. There are many parts to a stethoscope that allow sounds to be transmitted to the listener.

    Earpieces

  1. These are the little knob-like fixtures that are placed in the ear canal. This allows the user to hear the sounds they are listening for.
  2. Ear Tubes

  3. This is the metal part of the stethoscope to which the tubing and earpieces are connected.
  4. Tubing

  5. The tubing of the stethoscope is attached to the ear tubes and carries the sound from the chestpiece and delivers it to the earpieces.
  6. Chestpiece

  7. The chestpiece can be single-sided or double-sided. This is placed on the area of examination. On a double-sided chestpiece, the smaller side is for lower frequency sounds. The larger side is for hearing high-pitched sounds.
  8. Chill Ring

  9. The chill ring is located on the chestpiece. Its purpose is to protect the patient from contact with the coldness of metal when applying the chestpiece to skin.
  10. Design Basics

  11. These basic parts are what you will find on all stethoscopes, although more expensive models may provide more features.
