Blood Sugar Ranges for Children

Children with elevated blood sugar symptoms are prone to numerous symptoms, including increased hunger, thirst and blurred vision. If they develop full-blown diabetes, they can suffer from health problems that could result in amputated limbs and premature death. Low blood sugar can produce symptoms of fatigue and confusion, and it can adversely impact a child's performance in school, sports and other activities.

Normal Blood Sugar Ranges

Before breakfast, blood sugar ranges should be 70-99 mg/dl (milligrams/deciliter). Two to four hours after a meal, the blood sugar range should be 70-139 mg/dl.

Symptoms of Abnormal Blood Sugar Ranges

Increased thirst, urination and hunger, along with weight loss and blurred vision, are the most common signs.

Testing Blood Sugar

If your child demonstrates any symptoms, a doctor may perform a fasting plasma glucose test, a casual plasma glucose test or an oral glucose tolerance test.

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, known as juvenile onset diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), is the most common form of the disease among children. Type 2 diabetes usually effects overweight adults over age 40.

Lifestyle Changes

A healthy diet, exercise and frequently testing blood sugar levels are the best ways for children to deal with the disease. Eating frequent small meals throughout the day can alleviate low blood sugar.
