Leg Cramp Herbal Remedies

Leg cramps happen when the muscles in your legs--most often in your calves--tighten up involuntarily. Many people experience these painful spasms at night. Leg cramps can be caused by lack of proper nutrition and exercise, circulation problems or for apparently no known reason at all. Herbal remedies for leg cramps are a natural way to get your tight muscles to relax and function properly.

  1. Bilberry

    • Bilberry is a fruit in the blueberry family that contains properties similar to those found in muscle relaxant drugs. Adults may take a 500 mg bilberry supplement pill at the time of a leg cramp. Repeat this up to three times every hour as needed.

    Gingko Biloba

    • Optimize circulation in your legs to control leg cramps by taking gingko biloba supplements. Gingko opens up your blood vessels and increases blood flow to your limbs.

    Ginger

    • Ginger is another herbal remedy that can aid circulation issues that may be contributing to your leg cramps. You can drink up to 3 cups of ginger tea daily to reap its benefits.

    Herbal Barks

    • Cramp bark and Peruvian bark are two herbal remedies that can help ease the pain of leg cramps. Both herbs have anti-spasmodic qualities.

    Caution

    • Herbs may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking. Consult your doctor before treating your leg cramps with herbal supplements.
