Signs of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus infections, also called onychomycosis, can be caused by fungi, yeasts or molds that proliferate in dark, moist environments, such as sweaty shoes. Toenail fungus can be difficult to eradicate, as many times the infection will come back.

  1. First Signs

    • Often the first sign of a toenail fungus--a whitened area in the end of the nail--is very small and hard to see. Check your toenails routinely to make it easier to catch the first signs of an infection.

    Discoloration

    • The toenail will take on a dark shade once there is a fungal infection in full swing. This is due to the fungus and other debris that gather underneath the nail.

    Shape

    • Toenail fungus may cause the nail to change in shape and texture. The nail may become thicker, yet more brittle and jagged in appearance. Infected toenails do not shine, but look dull.

    Pain

    • Toenail fungus can cause pain to the toes and upper part of the foot.

    Odor

    • An unpleasant smell may permeate from a toenail that has developed a fungal infection.
