Many people are surprised to learn that used oil can be recycled. Most states and municipalities have oil recycling programs in place, and almost all of the oil collected at automotive service centers and repair shops is recycled.

  1. Water

    • Recycling oil helps prevent water contamination. One million gallons of water can be contaminated by 1 gallon of used motor oil.

    Longevity

    • Oil picks up dirt and contaminants when used, but it never wears out. We can re-refine oil and use it again indefinitely.

    Energy

    • Pumping Crude Oil

      Different types of oil are made from different bases, called base stock. Less energy is needed to re-refine recycled oil to make base stock than is needed to create base stock from crude oil.

    Foreign Oil

    • Recycling oil reduces a country's dependency on imported oil.

    Uses

    • Old motor oil can be used to make lubricating oils and marine fuels. Oils can also be burned in boilers and furnaces. When burned to create electricity, 2 gallons of used oil can satisfy the energy needs of an average household for almost 24 hours.

      Old oil can be recycled after being used in cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles, RVs and lawnmowers.
