Early Signs of Skin Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in the U.S.--more than 1 million people are diagnosed each year. Detecting skin cancer in its early stages is the best way to prevent it from spreading. Watch out for symptoms to see whether you are at risk for skin cancer.

  1. Clear Moles on Face or Neck

    • Clear, smooth moles on the face or neck might indicate skin cancer. It might look waxy or blistered.

    Mole Growth

    • Any mole that grows abnormally should be checked out by a doctor. Abnormal mole growth is an early sign of skin cancer and could develop into tumors.

    Change in Mole Color

    • Another early sign is a change in mole color. Moles might turn red, blue, white or purple.

    Red Moles on Face, Neck or Arms

    • Red moles on the face, neck or arms are early signs of skin cancer. It is usually hard and smooth in appearance.

    Scaly Skin Patches

    • Scaly, rough skin patches on any area of the body are early, sometimes dangerous signs of skin cancer. Soothing it with lotion or ointments does not soften the patches.

    Mole Size

    • Any moles bigger than 6 mm should be checked out by a physician. Bigger moles are more susceptible to skin cancer.
