Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a diagnosis of exclusion; that is, it can't be definitively determined what is causing the often uncomfortable and embarrassing intestinal discomfort. Once diagnosed with IBS, you can manage your condition by paying attention to high fiber foods and ensuring you eat them as your body can manage.

    During a Flare-Up

  1. If you're experiencing symptoms, then avoid high fiber foods. Since the condition appears to be an issue with the smooth muscles that manage the intestine's work, less fiber is more helpful until your body returns to normal function.
  2. Regular Diet

  3. When you're healthy, eat healthy and include plenty of high fiber. Salads, leafy greens such as kale and spinach, as well as beans are all part of a healthy diet to keep your intestines functioning normally.
  4. Cereal

  5. Be careful with cereals. Focus on those that provide lots of fiber and very low sugar content. Sugar can irritate the intestine and IBS sufferers want to avoid anything that can trigger an attack.
  6. Multigrain

  7. Replace any white flour product in your diet with a multigrain product. This increases the amount of fiber you're taking in and can minimize issues. Tortillas, bread, even snack crackers are now available in multigrain versions.
  8. Fruit

  9. The high fiber content of certain fruits, like apples and oranges can be difficult to manage. Other fruits, such as grapes, berries and melons don't appear to cause issues, though your personal diet needs may vary.
