HPV Cures

There are no cures for HPV (human papillomaviruses), but there are treatments for the various symptoms. HPV infections reveal themselves as warts: common, plantar, flat and genital. There are also several cancers caused by HPV including cervical, mouth and anal cancer. The most prevalent treatment is to remove the warts or lesions using several methods.

  1. Over-the-Counter Ointments

    • Commercial products, like Compound W, are used to treat common warts and plantar warts on the hands, fingers, and feet. Most of these products contain a mild acid like salicylic acid.

    Herbal Remedies

    • There are several herbs that strengthen the immune system and fight infection like goldenseal, echinacea and garlic. Lemon balm is an antiviral. Use this herbs topically or internally.

    Prescription Creams

    • For genital warts doctors prescribe Condylox and Aldara, both of which are applied directly to the warts.

    Cryotherapy

    • This procedure uses liquid nitrogen to freeze off genital warts and pre-cancerous lesions. Only a doctor can perform cryotherapy.

    Burning

    • Doctors burn off warts using an electrical current. This procedure is called electrocautery. Doctors also burn off warts using chemicals like trichloroascetic acid.

    Surgery

    • Doctors surgically remove some warts by cutting them out. Laser surgery cuts out warts and lesions by using a beam of light.
