Lichen Skin Disorders
There are several types of lichen skin disorders, all of which stem from unknown causes. Medical researchers think that lichen may be a condition that is caused by a reaction from our immune system (see Resources). The inflammation of the skin and its symptoms are not contagious.

Types of Lichen
-
Lichen planus is characterized as bumpy lesions on your arms, legs and sometimes genitals. Lichen sclerosus shows up thin white patches of skin, most commonly seen on the genitals of both genders. A third form of lichen, called lichen nitidus, occurs most commonly on the trunk in the form of small bumps.
Symptoms
-
The main symptom of any form of lichen is severe itching and sometimes burning. People who suffer from a severe case of lichen sclerosis may experience blistering of the skin and bleeding.
-
Diagnosis
-
Your doctor will take a small biopsy of skin from the affected area in order to accurately diagnose lichen as the cause of a rash.
Treatment
-
Treatment of lichen depends on the location of the rash. You may not need any treatment at all for mild cases of lichen. Taking an antihistamine may reduce itchiness. Corticosteroid creams and ointments may be used to treat lichen in the genital areas.
More Facts
-
