Parts of a URL Address

The Uniform Resources Locator, also known as the "URL" is the address of a website. The "URL" is used to link websites pages to each other through Hyper Text Mark-Up language, better known as "HTML". A "URL" is made up of several parts, and each part forms a connection for communication.

  1. HTTP

    • "Http" is a communication protocol between the browser and the web server. A protocol defines a set of rules so the browser and web server can clearly "talk" to each other.

    The Colon

    • The colon acts as a separation mechanism between the protocol and the rest of the web address, such as the domain name.

    Forward Slashes

    • Forward slashes are an initiation for contact. It tells the web address to achieve contact with another server.

    Index.html

    • The index.html is the name of a requested file, which is usually a default page on a website. It is also written as index.htm or default.html

    Domain Name

    • The "fully qualified domain name" is the complete web address such as www.ehow.com. The "domain name" only refers to the last part of the web address, such as ehow.com.
