Foods That Trigger Migraines

There are foods that do trigger migraine headaches. It is often considered to be one of the signs that you might be allergic or intolerant to the food. It could be that you can't tolerate the chemical components of that particular food. Let's have a look at the categories.

    Stimulants

  1. First on the hit list are stimulants. Caffeine in all beverages, chocolate, theanine (found in teas) and food enhancers like monosodium glutamate, or MSG, are known culprits.
  2. Legumes

  3. Peas, peanuts, peanut butter, lentils, soy, lima, Italian beans and other such legumes can factor into migraines.
  4. Sugars

  5. Food containing high amounts of sugar, honey and fructose can trigger severe headaches as they create a rapid rise in blood sugar that can be followed by a dramatic drop in blood sugars from the overproduction of insulin from the pancreas.
  6. Preservatives

  7. Migraines can stem from foods that contain sodium nitrate and benzoic acids such as hot dogs, bacon and other cured meats.
  8. Yeast

  9. Breads that are made from yeast or sourdough can play a role in migraines.
  10. Sulfates and Alcohol

  11. Migraines have been linked to sulfates found in red wines, beer, champagne and vermouth.
  12. Dairy and cheese

  13. Dairy intolerance and allergies as well as aged cheeses cause migraines.
