Reasons to Wear a Helmet on a Motorcycle
Despised in some circles, the motorcycle helmet serves a range of purposes and protects the head from head injury and road debris. Whether required by law or not, helmets have many different benefits.
-
Protection
-
Helmets protect the head from road rash and trauma in accidents. A University of Pittsburgh study following the repeal of helmet laws in Pennsylvania showed a 66 percent increase in head injury deaths after a 24 percent reduction in helmet use.
Bugs
-
Flying bugs are the bane of riders and there is nothing more disgusting than having a large bug splat directly on your face. A motorcycle helmet keeps that from happening.
-
Debris
-
Stones and other debris can be thrown up from the road; dust gets in the eyes. Debris may also be tossed from the vehicle in front; it's not uncommon to see an ashtray tipped out of the window. Helmets keep such debris from your face.
Communication
-
Helmets fitted with radios aid communication between riders. They can also be wired for music.
Climate Control
-
In winter, helmets keep out the cold. At all times of year, they keep out the constant wind that contributes to fatigue and cold. In summer, they reduce sunburn and help prevent dehydration by allowing sweat time to cool your skin.
Visibility
-
A glossy, patterned helmet is reflective and adds to the general visibility of a rider. When a rider mostly wears black, such a helmet stands out.
