Hiatal hernia is a condition in which part of the stomach--usually the esophagus--enters into the chest cavity through the diaphragm. When this opening (or hernia) is large enough, however, the entire upper portion of the stomach can get trapped above the diaphragm. It is a relatively common condition--it occurs in about 60 percent of people by the age of 60--and many people won't even notice any symptoms; however, it is important to know the symptoms, as they may be confused with more serious conditions such as a heart attack.

    Chest Pains

  1. Hiatal hernia can cause chest pain that will be experienced as pressure on the chest that may extend to the arm and neck. This may be confused with angina, or heart pain, so it is important to see a doctor if chest pain is present to rule out a more serious condition.
  2. Hiccups and Belching

  3. Prolonged and repeated hiccups or belching may indicate that the esophagus has entered the diaphragm.
  4. Heartburn

  5. Heartburn may be experienced in a hiatal hernia due to the esophagus's changed position in the body, which will send stomach acids into its delicate lining and cause heartburn.
  6. Severe Pain

  7. In rare cases, the blood supply to the trapped stomach may be cut off, resulting in excruciating pain. This must be treated as a medical emergency, as death may result.
  8. GERD

  9. Hiatal hernia often causes the esophagus's sphincter muscled to weaken, which leads to GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, where stomach acids and digestive enzymes flow uncontrollably into the esophagus, leading to a constant heartburn feeling.
