Home Remedies for Eczema

Eczema is technically a form of allergic reaction. It creates scaly, itchy patches on the skin, which may become red and dry over time. For some people, eczema arises only when they come into contact with something they are allergic to. For others, it is a recurring condition they must deal with in some form or another for most of their lives. Accordingly, it pays to learn a few home remedies to cut down on its effects, rather than calling the dermatologist whenever an outbreak occurs.

  1. Clothing

    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid itchy fabrics. It will prevent the skin from becoming aggravated.

    Lotions

    • Moisturizing lotions have a soothing effect on the skin and can mitigate the worst symptoms of eczema. Hydrocortisone and calamine lotion work especially well.

    Bathing

    • Take showers instead of baths, and don't let the water get too hot. Hot water can dry out the skin and make the eczema worse.

    The Source

    • If your eczema is caused by a specific allergic reaction, pinpoint the source and remove it from your home.

    Scratching

    • Never pick or scratch at an eczema outbreak. It makes things worse and can lead to scarring. If you scratch while you sleep, try wearing gloves to bed.

    Sweating and Stressing

    • Try to reduce your stress and anxiety during an eczema outbreak. Excessive sweating can aggravate the rash, and mental strain doesn't help either. Maintain a healthy diet, engage in relaxing activities and get a full night's sleep whenever you suffer from an outbreak.
