Sore throats may be caused by allergies, colds, respiratory infections or environmental exposure to irritants. The swelling and pain of sore throats can make it difficult to swallow or talk and can increase coughing, which may spread infections to others. Many home remedies are available for treating sore throats, but people whose throat pain gets worse or is not relieved within several days should see a doctor.

    Honey

  1. Honey coats the throat and can reduce soreness in the throat when taken on its own or when mixed into a warm beverage.
  2. Tea

  3. Hot tea with lemon can soothe sore throat pain and dryness, and the lemon juice acts to reduce mucus, according to the Mayo Clinic.
  4. Chicken Soup

  5. According to the Mayo Clinic, this classic remedy does work to relieve sore throats and nasal congestion by reducing inflammation.
  6. Steam

  7. Steam from a warm shower or humidifier can reduce throat irritation and prevent the throat from becoming too dry.
  8. Salt & Water

  9. Gargling with a half teaspoon of salt mixed into an 8-ounce glass of warm water can loosen mucus and ease throat pain.
  10. Mints

  11. Sucking on peppermints or other types of hard candies can moisturize the throat and help the flow of mucus.
  12. Fresh Air

  13. Chemicals from household cleaners and tobacco smoke can cause more inflammation and increase throat pain; getting fresh air can reduce irritation caused by these environmental chemicals.
