Colon Polyp Symptoms

A Colon polyp is a little growth of tissue that develops in the wall of the colon. Polyps can either be raised resembling a mushroom or flat against the colon. There are two different types of polyps that can develop: hyperplasic polyps (benign) and adenomatous polyps (malignant). Colon Polyps take years to become dangerous. Not all cases of colon polyps will show symptoms.

  1. Bleeding

    • Polyps of the colon may cause intermittent bleeding from the anus. Bleeding may be present either after the person has had a bowel movement, or in underwear periodically.

    Loose Stools or Constipation

    • Polyps may cause chronic diarrhea in the person. This diarrhea may or may not include blood as well. A person may experience constipation that lasts longer than one week.

    Pain

    • Larger polyps can cause a person to have abdominal pain. This pain can be due to the colon being partially blocked by the polyp.

    Weight

    • In cases where colon polyps have become cancerous, the person may begin to lose weight. Additional changes in bowel habits (such as severe diarrhea) that affect this weight loss will become obvious.

    Health

    • Other symptoms caused in relation to colon polyps include fatigue, muscle weakness and anemia. These associated illnesses are due to the person suffering from diarrhea and rectal bleeding.
