Ocular Migraine Causes

Ocular migraines, or ophthalmic migraines, can be frightening. This type of migraine often occurs without warning and can happen without the typical pain of a traditional migraine. Ocular migraines are often accompanied by flashing lights, halos, rainbows, or other optical effects that can be scary for the sufferer. Here are the main causes of an ocular migraine:

  1. Stress

    • Stress is one of the leading causes of the ocular migraine, so learning new and different ways to relax might be a good idea.

    Menstruation

    • Menstruation, either during menstruation or right before, can also trigger an ocular migraine.

    Hunger

    • Making sure that you eat regular meals may help ward off an ocular migraine. Hunger is often a trigger to an ocular episode.

    Alcohol

    • Since alcohol can increase the frequency of ocular migraines, it might be a good idea to avoid drinking it.

    Caffeine

    • Try to avoid caffeine, especially highly sweetened coffee drinks. The caffeine in coffee causes severe ocular migraines.
