Original Intent of Ambien

Ambien and Ambien CR were developed to treat occasional insomnia and to induce sleep, and are not for long-term use. Prescribed usually for 7 to 10 days, Ambien can become habit-forming.
Dosages

Ambien is available in 5mg and 10mg tablets. Ambien CR (Controlled Release) is available in 6.25mg or 12.5mg tablets.

Side Effects

Ambien is habit-forming if taken longer than its prescribed term. It must only be taken when you can go to bed and stay there for at least 6-8 hours.
Ambien can produce event-amnesia; incidents involving eating or driving without remembering having done so have been reported.
In rare cases, severe side effects such as worsening depression, hallucinations, agitation, suicidal thoughts, confusion and behavioral changes can occur. Report any disturbing side effects to your primary care physician immediately..
Safety

Do not drink alcohol or operate machinery when taking Ambien. Do not change the dosage or length of treatment without consulting your doctor.
Withdrawal

Unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, including muscle cramps, vomiting, sweating and shaking can occur if you suddenly stop taking Ambien after taking it daily for an extended period.
