Diets for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Since gastroesophagael reflux disease is nearly always a life-long condition, diet changes are suggested to keep it under control. Certain foods will aggravate the GERD, and medication may not be enough to control it if diet changes aren't made. Symptoms will often return if a patient sways from the recommended diet.

  1. Acidic Foods

    • Foods in the citrus group--or those high in acid--will increase heartburn from GERD. Avoid foods like grapefruit, oranges, tomatoes, and vinegar.

    Hot & Spicy

    • It's not just the jalapenos that cause heartburn. All peppers and chilies can cause symptoms, and they should be avoided by anyone suffering from reflux.

    Grease

    • Fried and greasy foods are especially bad for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Stay away from foods like French fries and cheeseburgers.

    Beverages

    • Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages are triggers for GERD, as are carbonated drinks like sodas.

    Also Avoid

    • Other things to avoid to prevent the heartburn of Reflux are chocolate, mint and mustard.

    Tip

    • Eating 5 to 6 small meals a day instead of larger ones can definitely help in controlling the symptoms of the disease.
