Hypothyroidism Symptoms

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid fails to produce enough thyroid hormone. This may be due to a problem with the thyroid gland itself, or a problem with the pituitary hormone or hypothalamus, both of which stimulate the production of thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder and is more prevalent in men than in women.

  1. Fatigue

    • Fatigue and loss of energy are common symptoms of hypothyroidism. This also includes a lack of mental energy, which may manifest as problems with concentration or memory.

    Digestive Symptoms

    • Hypothyroidism can produce mild to moderate weight gain despite loss of appetite. It can also cause constipation. The weight gain may be largely fluid, and patients may experience hard-pitting edema, particularly in the lower extremities.

    Dermatological Symptoms

    • Dry skin and hair, hair loss, and decreased perspiration can all occur with hypothyroidism.

    Sensory Disturbances

    • Blurred vision, decreased hearing and feeling of numbness or tingling in the hands and feet are all possible symptoms. Cold intolerance or feeling cold even in warmer temperatures is not uncommon.

    Psychological Symptoms

    • Depression, mood swings and cognitive impairment can all indicate hypothyroidism

    Pain

    • Aches and pains in the joints and muscles and feelings of muscle weakness can occur. Hypothyroidism may also cause muscle swelling.

    Fertility

    • Menstrual irregularities and an inability to conceive can be symptoms of hypothyroidism.
