Common Dog Vomiting Diseases

All dogs and puppies vomit periodically. Vomiting just once or twice and then acting normally is not a cause for alarm. Vomiting at the same time every day is a cause for concern, as is vomiting more than three times in a day. When vomiting is accompanied by diarrhea, fever or other symptoms, the vet needs to be called immediately.

  1. Parvovirus

    • This potentially deadly disease is vomiting accompanied with diarrhea and listlessness. This disease can be prevented with inoculations.

    Pancreatitis

    • This can kill a dog quickly and needs emergency care. The dog is depressed, vomits repeatedly, even when he can't bring up anything. Diarrhea often accompanies it.

    Encephalitis

    • This is more common in toy breeds than in larger dogs. Along with projectile vomiting, they will seem confused and uncoordinated. This can be treated if caught in time.

    Distemper

    • This potentially fatal disease can also be prevented with regular vaccinations. Vomiting is accompanied by fever, listlessness and clear discharge from the eyes and nose which turns to yellow pus in later stages.

    Histoplasmosis

    • This digestive disease is caused by a fungal infection. Along with vomiting, the dog will cough, have fever, loose all appetite and have diarrhea.
