Gallbladder & Symptoms

The gallbladder is an organ used by the body in the digestive process. It stores bile for the liver. In the gallbladder, the bile becomes more concentrated. However, humans can live without a gallbladder. Some people must have their gallbladder removed because of painful symptoms caused by gallbladder disease.

  1. Identification

    • The gallbladder is pear-shaped and small. It is located behind the liver on the right side of the rib cage.

    Function

    • The gallbladder releases bile into the small intestine. Bile helps break down fats.

    Initial Symptoms

    • Indigestion, gas, bloating, and burping are some of the common early signs of gallbladder disease. The symptoms usually occur after a meal, especially if the meal contains fat.

    Pain

    • The common area of pain with gallbladder disease is under the rib cage. The pain may be sharp or a constant ache. The pain may travel between the shoulder blades.

    Additional Symptoms

    • Some patients have nausea, queasiness, vomiting, gas, constipation, and headaches. A bitter fluid may come up after eating.
