High schools are complex. Generally holding 1,000 or more students, the high school secretary must be aware of all of the school's programs and must know all the staff. Many underestimate the responsibilities of a high school secretary.

    Organization

  1. High school secretaries keep the school organized. The secretary creates the calendar, formats and distributes the school newsletter, and communicates with the community.
  2. Enrollment

  3. No one enters high school without the secretary enrolling them. This includes teachers. Secretaries make sure that all necessary forms are completed by students and staff.
  4. Supports Administrators

  5. The high school secretary supports the principal and the vice-principal. She schedules appointments, completes paperwork and handles phone calls for all administrators.
  6. Works a Longer Schedule

  7. Unlike teachers who work 186 days, secretaries work approximately 210 days. Secretaries start 2 weeks before teachers and work 1 week after school ends. The high school secretary is also responsible for opening the school and generally is one of the last people to leave for the day.
  8. Keeps the School Atmosphere Positive

  9. The high school secretary is often the person who decorates the administration office and hallway. Whether it is Christmas trees or spider webs and pumpkins, secretaries often create an inviting atmosphere.
