The two most optimal ways to view a movie from a home TV come are high-definition (HD) DVD and Blu Ray discs. Both provide outstanding digital images and sound. You cannot go wrong with either viewing standard, but here are some differences to consider.

  1. Origins

    • HD DVD was created by Toshiba and was viewed as the successor to standard DVD format.

      Sony started two projects, known as UDO (Ultra Density Optical) and DVR Blue, which eventually became known as Blu Ray.

    HD DVDs Discontinued

    • In February 2009, it was announced that HD DVDs would no longer exist, making Blu Ray the ultimate and best way to view a movie from home.

    HD DVD Specifications

    • HD DVD included a single and dual layer capacity from 15 to 30 GB. HD DVD also supported several file systems and allowed encoding up to 24 bit/192 kHz for audio.

    Blu Ray Specifications

    • Blu Ray stores 25 GB for a single layer and 50 GB for a dual layer. It also includes several file systems and storage for audio.

    Future

    • Blu Ray has definitely taken over the HD DVD playing market. The picture is outstanding, the sound terrific and the prices slowly becoming more affordable. Blu Ray has also merged with the PlayStation 3 (Ps3) gaming console to combine two popular electronic markets together.
