Anxiety Medications for Dogs

Dogs show anxiety for several reasons, from having phobias to riding in the car. But the usual cause is separation anxiety, where they go into a frenzy when left alone. They can wind up destroying furniture, floors, doors, bark incessantly or chew on themselves. Dogs with anxiety problems need to be seen by a vet.

Function

Medications are only to help calm the dog down enough to be more open to training. They are not to be used in the place of training.

Time Frame

How long a dog takes the medications depends on the individual dog and how severe the problem is. Some dogs deathly afraid of thunderstorms may have to take medications for years, but dogs with separation anxiety may only need medication a few months.

Types

Types of medications used include antidepressants such as Prozac (fluoxetine); beta blockers such as propranalol and anti-anxiety medication such as Xanax. The only medication approved in America for separation anxiety in dogs is clomipramine.

Warning

Never give a dog a medication meant for people. It could be too strong for the dog and may even kill him.

Breeds

Dog breeds that are prone to anxiety include border collies, Weimaraners, German shepherds and Airedales.
