Allergy Medications That Are Safe for Dogs

Dogs are vulnerable to allergens just as humans are. When dogs go outside to play and take care of their business, they may come in contact with substances, such as grass and pollen, that can cause allergic reactions. Dogs may exhibit itchy skin, watery eyes and sneezing. Help them get relief from the substances they encounter in their environment.

Benadryl

Benadryl is a safe antihistamine which can be administered to dogs. It helps relieve itchy skin and respiratory allergic reactions (see Resources below).

Dermatological

Doctor Foster and Smith's 3V Caps, Vitacoat® Plus, Healthy Coat Allergy Tabs and Healthy Coat Omega-3 Gel Caps are preparations formulated from fatty acids, which provide relief for itchy skin as well as promote a healthy, shiny coat.

Botanicals/Enzymes

Ask Ariel's Bioallergies Plus is a preparation containing enzymes and botanical agents that help reduce a dog's reaction to airborne and contact substances. This product will also help dog food allergies (see Resources below).

Atopica

This is a good substitution for prednisone; the cyclosporine in Atopica is much safer, and dogs won't suffer the negative side effects of prednisone.

Allergy Shots

This alternative is expensive, but it helps a dog's immune system adjust to the allergens to which it is reacting. If you don't want to give your dog medications, this is an alternative to consider.
