Physical Symptoms of an Alcohol Detox

Alcohol detox is the physical process that occurs when an alcoholic stops ingesting alcohol on a regular basis. It is the first step to addiction rehabilitation. There are many physical symptoms associated with alcohol detox, and depending on the severity and duration of the addiction, some can develop into life-threatening complications. Because of this, it is always recommended that an individual endure alcohol detox under the supervision of a health care professional.

  1. Vomiting

    Fever

    • Individuals undergoing alcohol detox will also experience fever, chills and sweating episodes as symptoms.

    Light Sensitivity

    • Alcohol detoxification produces sensitivity to light, sound, touch and taste for the first few days after alcohol ingestion has ceased

    Seizures and Brain Damage

    • Seizures are a physical symptom associated with severe detox, and can cause heart and brain damage.

    Increased Risk of Heart Failure

    • Severe cases of alcohol detoxification can also significantly increase heart rate and blood pressure, which can lead to heart failure.
