Algebra Math Tips

Algebra can be difficult for some students to tackle. The tips provided here will make learning algebra a little easier. From the history of algebra to ways of remembering steps to solving an equation, you will learn strategies to keep you from stressing over x's and y's.

  1. History

    • Algebra dates back to the Babylonians, who solved algebraic equations with variables and formulas. However, Diophantus, a Greek mathematician, is considered to be the father of algebra.

    Lines

    • Lines that look like they are going uphill on a mountain have positive slopes, while those that look like they are going downhill have negative slopes.

    Solving for X

    • To solve for x in a simple algebra equation, you must be sure to get x alone on one side of the equation. For an equation like 2x + 3=9, always remember to start with the number that is not tied to the variable. We then can reduce the equation to 2x=6, and then x=3.

    Properties

    • Understand the properties used in algebraic expressions, including commutativity, inverse, identity and associativity (see Resources below).

    Polynomials

    • Polynomials are expressions that can be factored out. In factoring, there are two expressions in parentheses instead of one long expression. The factors use x's and when multiplied out using FOIL equal to the longer equation (see Resources below).
