US Army Pay Scale and Benefits

Pay for the U.S. Army, as well as the other branches of the armed forces, is authorized by Congress annually, along with other military funding, by the passing of the National Defense Authorization Act. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) manages all military pay and publishes the annual pay tables.

  1. Basic Pay

    • Basic pay, or base pay, is the military equivalent to a salary. The basic pay table is broken down by rank and by time in service.

    Allowances

    • Allowances are extras that are added to the base pay for specific purposes. Examples include Housing Allowance, Clothing Allowance and Family Separation Allowance.

    Incentives

    • Monetary incentives are used to encourage members of the U.S. Army to take or keep hazardous or understaffed positions. Examples include Hazardous Duty Pay, Imminent Danger Pay and Career Enlisted Flyer Pay.

    Special Pay

    • Special pay is given to certified professionals, usually doctors and lawyers, who are members of the U.S. Army. Some special pay is added to the member's monthly pay, but other special pay is given as a one-time lump-sum bonus.

    Drill Pay

    • Members of the U.S. Army Reserve are paid only for the days they are required to drill. Drill pay is based on rank, time in service and number of drills.
