Many women suffer from heartburn during pregnancy, because hormonal changes soften the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus (food pipe). This allows the acidic stomach contents to back up into the esophagus and cause heartburn. The same problem may be aggravated toward the end of the pregnancy as the growing fetus pushes the stomach upwards. Read on to learn about a few remedies for this ailment.

From Quick Guide: Stomach Acid Help

    Avoid Heartburn Triggers

  1. Avoid the foods and drinks which can trigger heartburn. These include acidic and fatty foods as well as alcohol, cola drinks, tea and coffee. You should also avoid eating large meals or eating food in a hurry.
  2. Posture

  3. A standing or sitting posture that constricts the stomach can aggravate heartburn. Avoid slouching when you sit, and don't bend over or lie down too soon after eating, because this makes it easier for the stomach contents to enter the esophagus.
  4. Sleeping Position

  5. Sleep with your head on an extra pillow or two, so that your esophagus is higher than your stomach. This will help prevent heartburn and give you a better night's sleep.
  6. Loose Clothing

  7. Tight clothing places pressure on your stomach. Wearing clothing that is loose and comfortable is less likely to lead to heartburn.
  8. Chew Gum

  9. Chew some gum before you eat. This stimulates the production of saliva, which in turn helps to neutralize the stomach acids that cause heartburn.
  10. Milk and Honey

  11. Milk and honey are a simple, pleasant and natural pregnancy heartburn remedy. Just stir a tsp. of honey into a glass of warm milk and drink at the first sign of heartburn. It offers natural, chemical-free relief.
  12. Baking Soda

  13. Another simple, natural pregnancy heartburn treatment is baking soda. Just mix a tsp. into a glass of warm water and drink it at the first sign of heartburn.
