Side Effects of a Rabies Shot for Dogs

There are very few countries (Great Britain is one) that do not require rabies shots for dogs. But most countries insist that dogs get rabies shots. These come in two forms--a live vaccine and a dead vaccine. Depending on where you live, your dog needs a booster every one to three years. Very rarely, dogs get side effects from the vaccination.

  1. Sleepiness

    • This is a normal side effect. Your dog will want to sleep the rest of the day. This should be gone in 24 hours.

    Swelling at Injection Site

    • This is another normal side effect but also should be gone in 24 hours. If not, please call your vet.

    Loss of Appetite

    • Another common side effect is a mild stomach upset or nausea for a few hours. Dogs show nausea by licking their lips, hunching their backs and not being interested in food, even treats.

    Itchy Skin

    • This is a side effect that could indicate an allergic reaction. The dog can get hives, swelling of the neck and red lips, and can itch all over. Call your vet immediately.

    Anaphylaxis

    • This happens within one or two days of the shot and requires the dog to go to the vet at once. The dog cannot breathe right, collapses and may have seizures. Vomiting and diarrhea also may occur.
