Human Medicine for Dogs

Veterinary care can be expensive. It's easy to wonder whether or not it would be cheaper to just give your dog something from your medicine cabinet. Actually, there are many different kinds of medicines that can be used on dogs. However, before giving your dog human medication, always call your vet and make sure that it's the best thing to do.

      • Benadryl can be given to dogs for allergies. Give your dog 1 mg per lb. every 8 hours. If your dog is 10 pounds, he can be given 10 mg of Benadryl.

      Immodium/Pepto Bismol

      • Both Immodium AD and Pepto Bismol can be used to treat diarrhea in your dog. Give 1 ml per lb. for Immodium or 1 tsp. for every 5 lb. for Pepto Bismol, every 6 to 8 hours.

      Buffered Aspirin

      • Regular aspirin can cause dogs to develop ulcers, and so kids' aspirin is recommended. Give 5 mg per lb., every 12 hours, for pain relief.

      Robitussin DM

      • Robitussin can be used to treat coughing/hacking in your dog. Give 1 tsp. per 20 lb., every 8 to 12 hours.

      Dramamine

      • Dogs with motion sickness can be treated with Dramamine. Give 2 mg per lb., every 8 hours.

      Tylenol/Ibuprofen

      • These medications are known to cause liver damage in dogs. Do not give your dog medication containing ibuprofen, such as Tylenol.
