Diabetic Dry Skin Symptoms

Dry skin is one of the earliest signs of type 2 diabetes, often occurring long before people know they have diabetes. High blood glucose creates problems such as poor circulation and limited nerve sensations in feet and hands, which can cause dry skin. People also can become dehydrated from urinating more often, a common diabetes symptom.

  1. Dermopathy

    • When diabetes causes damage to small blood vessels and small nerves that result in dry skin, this is called diabetic dermopathy.

    Circulation

    • Poor circulation can cause sweat glands to work less effectively, so there is not enough perspiration to help keep skin moist.

    Neuropathy

    • Peripheral neuropathy can cause a lack of sensation in feet and hands, which can keep people from noticing how severe their dry skin actually is. Skin can become so dry that it cracks. On feet, in particular, this can cause ulcerations.

    Glucose Levels

    • Once diabetics have their blood sugar under control, dry skin symptoms will clear up.

    Warning

    • In addition, people with diabetes should monitor their hands and feet for dry skin. Moisturizing soap and lotion should be used regularly. Skin which is cracked may become infected. This can be a serious problem for diabetics, since circulation issues make healing difficult.
