Diabetic Diet Guidelines

The best diet for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes consists of low-carbohydrate and low-fat menus which prevent blood sugar spikes, keeping glucose levels as even as possible. Carbohydrates in this diet should have a low glycemic value. A low-calorie menu is also appropriate for overweight diabetics, especially because being overweight is linked with type 2 diabetes.

  1. Carbohydrates

    • Low-glycemic carbohydrates include whole-wheat and other whole-grain cereals and breads, along with fruits and vegetables. Whole wheat pasta and brown rice are less likely to cause blood sugar spikes than white pasta and rice are.

    Processed Food

    • Diabetics should avoid processed and refined items such as white bread and fast food.

    Starch

    • People with diabetes also should limit intake of starches, such as bananas, potatoes and corn.

    Protein

    • Protein can be obtained from many low-fat sources, including fish, lean meat and low-fat dairy items. Chicken and turkey without the skin are good options as well. Soy and other legumes are good sources of protein.

    Considerations

    • Diabetic diet guidelines limit sweet food. An occasional sweet item is acceptable as long as the sugar is accounted for in the meal plan.
