Home Remedies for Cleaning Carpets

A clean carpet is the foundation of a clean home. Replacing carpeting is expensive. Extend the life of carpeting and area rugs with proper care. Do not procrastinate cleaning up spills and soiling on carpet. Use the right home remedy and keep a carpet clean and stain free for years.

    Vacuum

  1. Vacuum high traffic areas every other day and the entire carpet once a week. Change vacuum bags and vacuum canisters regularly.
  2. Home Steam Cleaner

  3. A home steam cleaner is a practical housekeeping tool. Use it to clean wet spills before they have time to dry and become set-in stains. Steam clean the entire carpet about twice a year.
  4. Baking Soda

  5. Sprinkle baking soda on your carpets before vacuuming to neutralize odors cheaply and effectively.
  6. Oxygen Based Cleaner

  7. Carpet stains and heavy traffic areas can be cleaned with an oxygen based cleaner like oxy-clean.
  8. Liquid Detergent

  9. Liquid detergent works to clean carpet stains. Mix one teaspoon of detergent with one quart of warm water in a spray bottle for easy application.
  10. Vinegar

  11. For strong odors and pet stains/odors use a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Cover the area lightly with aluminum foil until dry on pet stains to deter pets from resoling the area.
  12. Application

  13. With a soft brush gently apply the cleaning solution working from the outside to the center and use a clean towel to blot up the moisture. Repeat until the towel comes out clean then rinse with clean warm water and blot dry.
