Blocked Tear Duct Symptoms

While blocked tear ducts are uncommon in adults, six out of 100 newborns exhibit symptoms of this condition. A blocked tear duct occurs when the opening of the duct is obstructed or does not open to allow tears to drain properly through the duct system. The tear duct sac can become inflamed and often infected when the tears are unable to drain properly.

  1. Types

    • The most common sign of a blocked tear duct is an eye that tears up and waters often.

    Types

    • Sometimes there will be a discharge of pus, often yellow and even green.

    Symptons

    • When there is pus, you will notice the mucus crusting along the eyelashes, top and bottom.

    Other Things to Look For

    • Often, the eye will be more susceptible to infections because of the blocked tear duct.

    Symptoms

    • Look for redness and swelling around the eye.

    Considerations

    • Blocked tear duct symptoms can get worse after exposure to wind, sun and cold or after an upper respiratory infection. Many blocked tear ducts in babies clear up on their own with good hygiene and gentle massaging of the area, but if the eye shows signs of infection consult a physician.
