Cures for Dog Constipation

Prevention is the best cure when it comes to helping your dog with constipation issues. Diet and lifestyle changes usually can both prevent constipation and clear up an episode of the unpleasant condition. If the dog goes several days without defecating, however, or has additional symptoms, it may have more serious health problems and should be checked by a veterinarian.

  1. Fiber

    • Your dog may need more fiber. Ask your vet which high-quality dog foods have more fiber. Adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of bran or some high-fiber vegetables to the dog's dinner will help.

    Water

    • Dogs can become dehydrated, especially as they get older. Adding water to their food can prevent constipation.

    Pumpkin

    • A great homemade cure for dog constipation is adding pumpkin to the diet. Pumpkin is a good source of fiber and has a high water content. You can use fresh or canned pureed, but just be sure not to use pumpkin-pie filling.

    Exercise

    • Dogs need to be walked once or twice a day, and this is very beneficial for keeping them regular. Getting your dog to run around, perhaps in a game of "fetch," also helps. You've probably noticed that dogs often need to relieve themselves during exercise, because exercise stimulates the bowels.

    Medicine

    • A constipation remedy called Laxatone, with petroleum jelly as the active ingredient, is available at pet-food stores.
