Severe Depression Symptoms

Sadness, fatigue and hopelessness are common signs of depression. These feelings may be temporary and may be able to be overcome without medical treatment. However, when the symptoms persist and interfere with an individual's life on a daily basis, this is symptomatic of severe depression for which medical treatment may be required.

  1. Changes in Sleep

    • Increased sleep is usually associated with depression; however, reduction in sleep may occur instead. Changes in the duration and frequency of sleep are common.

    Changes in Appetite

    • Sudden weight gain or weight loss may accompany severe depression. Depressed individuals may experience nausea that discourages them from eating. Overeating may occur as a method of dealing with negative feelings.

    Social Withdrawal

    • Interactions with others are limited or avoided as a result of severe depression. The pleasure one experiences from being with others fades and it becomes more of a chore than something enjoyable.

    Fatigue

    • The energy level of severely depressed individuals is extremely diminished. They have little energy, even for those activities that previously brought them pleasure, and may struggle with just getting out of bed in the morning.

    Negative Thinking

    • Severe depression makes someone feel helpless. Negative thinking can become inescapable and may even lead to thoughts of suicide.
