Pneumonia Symptoms in Adults

At one point in history, pneumonia was one of the leading causes of death. Now, it is highly treatable, but it is important that it is recognized early and prevented from worsening; pneumonia can still be the harbinger of a long hospital stay if not properly treated.

  1. Upper Respiratory Infection

    • One of the first signs of pneumonia is an upper respiratory infection, including the cough, sore throat and congestion that begins during the common cold. When a cold goes on for days with no sign of letting up, it's highly possible that it will develop into pneumonia.

    Fatigue

    • Fatigue is often associated with early signs of pneumonia. Individuals may feel tired and worn out, and have difficulty finding energy to perform the simplest of tasks even after hours of sleep.

    Fever and Chills

    • Another sign of oncoming pneumonia is alternating fever and chills. Often feelings of extreme fever are followed closely by the sensation that all warmth has left the room.

    Cough

    • Adults will often develop a dry, severe cough with no mucus.

    Disorientation

    • One of the most telltale signs is a feeling of disorientation and dizziness. The onset of pneumonia often comes with a difficulty concentrating, delirium and a feeling often associated with consuming a few alcoholic drinks.
